September 17th was Constitution Day

I had planned to post something here yesterday, but being in Norge trying to get settled got in the way. I really I wish I had fit this in though, I feel terrible that I ignored the 2nd most important American Holiday just like most of the rest of my country does. To try to make up for it, I'd like to share with you what Downsize D.C. posted on their website.

I hope it is inspires you.

Quote of the Day:

"Americans just want us to... not be concerned if they can be constitutionally justified... Why, if we had to do that we could not pass most of the laws we enact around here."
-- Sen. John Glenn

Subject: The Unknown Holiday

Today is Constitution Day. Few Americans know this. Neither banks nor government offices will be closed. And most of us will go to work today, spending nearly half our time laboring to pay taxes to the various levels of government. In this sense today is no holiday at all. It's merely a designated spot on the calendar during which Americans are to . . .

Do what?

The politicians won't take notice of the day, though we've joined with the Liberty Coalition to encourage McCain and Obama to discuss Constitutional issues on the campaign trail. We won't be holding our breath in expectation that they will do so.

It remains to us, as individuals, to do something meaningful with the day.

We should be mindful of the role the Constitution has played in the success of our own lives. We live the freest and most affluent lives of any people on the planet, or in history. Our Constitution, which is now the oldest governing document in continuous use anywhere, has been crucial to this outcome.

The Constitution gave us a system of government with divided, competing, and explicitly defined powers. It gave us a Bill of Rights with strong limits on government action. The politicians have waged a continuous and largely successful assault on these attributes of our Constitution, but even so, the Constitution has continued to protect us often enough to make it one of the most important, if unappreciated, contributors to our daily lives and personal well-being.

It's easy to forget, overlook, or disparage, the number of times the Supreme Court has declared some act of Congress or the President as un-constitutional. But it has happened often, and has served to preserve our freedom and prosperity. In this we see not only the genius of the separation of powers, but also the continuing efficacy of the Bill of Rights. Without these attributes of our Constitution we would be not only less free, but also more poor.

Likewise, it's easy to under-appreciate the number of times Presidents have vetoed some over-reaching act of Congress, or times when Congress has acted to curtail the power of the Executive. Likewise, the Senate has often blocked actions of the House, and vice versa. And we have also been served when there have been partisan divisions between the Congress and the White House.

The separation of powers works. The Bill of Rights works. The Constitution works.

Look around the world. Wherever governments have less power, and the people more freedom, affluence, security, and peace reign. And wherever governments have more power, and the people less freedom, misery flourishes. And for as long as we have been the most free people in the world, we have also been the most prosperous and secure.

In America, even our poorest citizens live as kings compared to much of the rest of the world, and few of us need fear a policeman's knock on the door in the dead of the night, or that we will disappear into some camp or torture dungeon.

All of this, and more, is primarily a gift of our Constitution, for without it the people would long ago have voted their freedom away, and/or the politicians would have quickly assumed absolute power. A strong case can be made that only the Constitution has prevented these outcomes. So, today . . .

Ask not what the Constitution can do for you, for its gifts have already been conferred upon you in great abundance. Instead, ask what you can do for the Constitution. We would submit that you can, and should, speak up strongly on behalf of the Constitution's preservation. Please remind Congress that . . .

* Today is Constitution Day
* That they swore an oath to serve, protect, and defend the Constitution
* And that you would like to see them take concrete action to honor that oath, on today of all days

You can use your personal comments on two important campaigns to make these points to your elected representatives. First, ask them to pass the "Enumerated Powers Act," which would force Congress to specify their Constitutional authority for every act of legislation. You can send that message here.

Second, ask Congress to repeal previous egregious violations of the Constitution. You can do so by asking your representatives to co-sponsor Congressman Ron Paul's "American Freedom Agenda Act." This bill would . . .

* Repeal the “Military Commissions Act of 2006” and thereby restore the ancient right of habeas corpus and end legally sanctioned torture by U.S. government agents
* Restore the ”Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act” (FISA) and thereby outlaw warrantless spying on American citizens by the President of the United States
* Give Congress standing in court to challenge the President's use of "signing statements" as a means to avoid executing the nation's laws
* Make it illegal for government agents to kidnap people and send them abroad to be tortured by foreign governments
* Provide legal protection to journalists who expose wrong-doing by the Federal government
* Prohibit the use of secret evidence to label groups or individuals as terrorists for the purpose of criminal or civil sanctions

You can send that message here.

Please also support out work to defend the Constitution by making a contribution or starting a monthly pledge. You can do that here.

NOTE: You can remove this funding section if you forward this message to others, or post it on your blog. You can also comment on this message or "Digg it" at our blog.

Thank you for being a part of the growing Downsize DC Army.

Another thing I did to commemorate yesterday's holiday is start the process of getting an absentee ballot. There are loads of partisan websites trying to help, while at the same time trying to get you to vote the way they want you to. Here's a great nonpartisan absentee voters website, The Overseas Vote Foundation.

It's very good technologically too. The first page you get to is very simple, simply having links to four different websites. First there is the main page for all absentee voters, then the Youth Vote page for overseas voters between 18 and 28 years old, then the Military Voter Services page for voters either in the military and their eligible spouses and dependents, and finally theirs the low bandwidth version with reduced graphics and a higher speed for all overseas voters who have a slow internet connection. Basically, that last one is a speedier lighter version of the first one.

For all of you not voting because they don't think it'll matter. Remember, you are not alone. If everyone who isn't voting because they don't think their vote will really matter decided to vote, we would have a very different election.

Happy Constitution Day!

Federal deficit soaring, here's how you can help.

Federal deficit soaring, but McCain, Obama offer no answers

By DAVID LIGHTMAN AND KEVIN G. HALL
McClatchy Newspapers

Just weeks before the government's fiscal year ends Sept. 30, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office on Tuesday projected a near-record federal budget deficit of $407 billion, sharply higher than White House projections six weeks ago and more than double last year's figure.

Mammoth federal-budget deficits feed inflation, make America dependent on foreign lenders, cost taxpayers hundreds of billions of dollars in interest payments on the growing national debt and drain capital savings from more productive investments.

The widening gap between what the government spends and the revenue it brings in is sure to weigh on the next president and impede his efforts to spend on new or larger programs or to cut taxes.

Yet John McCain and Barack Obama show few signs that they're ready to take tough steps to curb deficits, according to budget analysts.

"I don't think either candidate is treating the deficit, or the debt, seriously. And I don't see any proposals from either one that would make the situation any better," said Robert Bixby, the executive director of the Concord Coalition, a bipartisan budget-watchdog organization.

Maya MacGuineas, the president of the bipartisan Center for a Responsible Federal Budget, said in a statement that both candidates "are promising hundreds of billions more in spending and tax cuts than they are paying for."

Republican nominee McCain has promised to balance the budget by 2013, but most analysts consider that goal elusive unless lawmakers make radical changes in Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid funding. McCain has made no such dramatic proposals.

Obama issued a statement Tuesday on the new data, promising that he'd "bring real change by cutting taxes for middle-class families and small businesses, paying for all his proposals to reduce the deficit" and working toward fiscal responsibility. He'd let tax cuts for the wealthiest earners expire and would impose higher taxes on certain corporations.

However, the Brookings Institution-Urban Institute Tax Policy Center has found that Obama's tax-reduction plan would increase the national debt by $3.5 trillion by 2018. McCain wants to leave existing tax cuts in place rather than let them expire, which the center said would add $5 trillion to the debt.

The CBO also offered a dismal forecast Tuesday, projecting a record deficit of $438 billion in the coming year due to the slowing economy, which would reduce tax receipts to the Treasury.

That fiscal 2009 deficit could rise another $83 billion if Congress, as expected, adjusts the alternative minimum tax. The deficit projection also doesn't include the potential costs to taxpayers from last weekend's seizure of mortgage-finance giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. The CBO had estimated a takeover cost of $25 billion, although financial experts suggest that it could exceed $100 billion.

The CBO's latest estimate for fiscal 2008 is $18 billion higher than the Bush administration's projection six weeks ago. The record is $413 billion in fiscal 2004. Fiscal 2007's deficit was $161 billion.

"The significant expansion in the deficit is the result of a substantial increase in spending and a halt in the growth of tax revenues," the CBO said.

White House Press Secretary Dana Perino said that one big reason the deficit went up was the stimulus that President Bush signed into law in February. The CBO said that another large part of the deficit's unexpected growth came from rising unemployment-benefit payments and higher spending to cover insured deposits in insolvent financial institutions.

Another boost to the deficit came from Congress and Bush's appetite for discretionary spending, which is expected to rise by $85 billion, or 8.1 percent, in the current fiscal year, mostly because of higher defense costs.

The CBO projected that economic growth would slow to a 1.5 percent annual rate this calendar year and 1.1 percent next year. Even if the tax cuts of 2001 and 2003 expire as scheduled on Jan. 1, 2011, the deficit would be $325 billion the following year.

To bridge the gap between spending and tax revenues, the federal government borrows, increasing the national debt. It's grown from $5.7 trillion in 2000 to almost $9.7 trillion on Tuesday.

Analyst Bixby doubted that either presidential candidate's proposals would make a serious dent in the deficit and debt.

"Even if both of them can pay for their new initiatives and not make the situation any worse, the situation is unsustainable," he said. "Simply treading water is not good enough if you are headed over the falls."

Sounds pretty bad eh? Well, it is, and here's how you can help. The Peter G. Peterson Foundation lists 10 general things you can do now.

1. Become informed about the key issues facing our country and society.
2. Teach children the importance of being financially responsible.
3. Register to vote. Your vote DOES make a difference. If you want the federal government to address the looming fiscal crisis, vote and let your voice be heard.
4. Engage current and prospective elected officials.
5. Vote for candidates who are leaders and responsible stewards for our future.
6. Hold elected officials accountable for acting on key issues and delivering on their promises.
7. Join with other citizens to broaden public knowledge about our fiscal challenges and support civic groups that are working to address them.
8. Establish a personal budget. Identify essential and luxury items and be diligent in cutting back excessive spending on luxury items.
9. Formulate a financial plan, make sacrifices, but stick to it.
10. Become more responsible in decisions to spend and use credit, save for the future and invest savings wisely.

Now, here are some of my own suggestions on specific ways you can do those ten things.

1. Other than reading my blog? Heh, well, personally I like to to read news.google.com and customize it to leave out the junk about celebrities and focus on the more important things.

2. Be frank with them about how much money you earn. Then tell them how much debt you have, how much the rent, mortgage, groceries, and other things cost. Then tell them how hard the work is to earn he money which goes into paying for all these things and how long it takes sometimes to finish paying off a bill. When they're older you can explain to them that the same principles that govern your family economy also govern the economy of different stores they go to, the school they attend, and even the government.

3. To register to vote online, go here: http://www.rockthevote.com/
I know for many of us it seems pointless to vote because we feel the majority in our state will always vote the same way. For instance, in my home state of Massachusetts we will definitely be voting for Barack Obama. However, if you have a different opinion on who should be president, let it be heard! Even if that person doesn't get any electoral college votes from your state, you can still let other elected officials, as well as other citizens, that there are some people in your state who want this other candidate and therefor may hold different values than one might stereotypically think based on the stat electoral college. Also, I think if everyone who didn't vote because they new it wouldn't make a difference did in fact vote, the total number of these people would in face make a big difference.

4. Engaging current and prospective officials is a really good way to get your voice hear, and believe me, you do have a real chance of making a difference this way. I have personally gotten responses twice from writing emails to my senator and representative. Here's a good website giving some good advice on how to go about engage these sorts of folks. http://www.heartsandminds.org/articles/lobby.htm Here's another helpful tool: http://www.visi.com/juan/congress/

5. Some of my favorites or Ron Paul, John Cunningham, Bob Barr, and Chuck Baldwin. Here's a website full of other similar-minded folks: http://paulcongress.com/Candidates.html

6. One organisation which is leading the effort to make government accountable is the We The People Foundation and their petitions for redress.

7. Well, I've already mentioned the We the People Foundation. Other good places are the Downsize D.C. Foundation, Ron Paul's Campaign For Liberty, The Heritage Foundation, and the Peter G. Peterson Foundation. Of these, I find Downsize D.C. the very best, and I think it could be the most effective in getting rid of our national deficit, increasing our freedom, and holding our elected officials more accountable all at once. I love it so much that I'll be dedicating several blogposts to them within this month.

8 and 9. Well, here's one free Christian personal finance book which might be interesting: http://www.scribd.com/doc/835/Managing-Your-Finances

September 2nd Rally for the Republic in Minniapolis, MN

From Ron Paul's Campaign for Liberty:

Friday, August 22, 2008

Dear Friends of Liberty,

The schedule is complete, the merchandise is being printed, and arrangements are being finalized.

With only 11 days to go until Campaign for Liberty's Rally for the Republic, your staff is burning the midnight oil trying to nail down all the final details.

This should be one of the biggest and best kick-off celebrations in the history of American politics. I sure hope you will join us.

We've got a jam-packed, exciting day planned for Tuesday, September 2nd, but the excitement doesn't stop after the stage lights turn off at the Target Center.

Grammy award winning guitarist (and Ron Paul supporter) Jimmie Vaughan will be our host and provide the entertainment for The Rally for the Republic After-Party. The party will be taking place at The Lone Tree/Annex - one block away from the Target Center.

It will officially start at 9:30 pm, and it will last until 4 am. There is a $10 cover charge, and there will be a cash bar/limited food menu.

Jimmie Vaughan is the brother of late guitar legend Stevie Ray Vaughan, and a musical legend in his own right. In addition to his involvement with many bands and famous artists over the years, he is an accomplished and successful solo artist that is known for his masterful blues guitar work.

From the official bio on his site:

Known for his deceptively simple yet complex attack, his clean, uncluttered style capitalizes on conveying the emotion and message within the music, He utilizes raw emotion, simplicity, and an elegance that is powerful and accessible, yet communicates exactly what he feels inside. It's an approach that has earned him the respect of many of the greats of contemporary music, and guest appearances on such albums as B.B. King and Eric Clapton's Riding With The King, Bob Dylan's Under The Red Sky, Willie Nelson's Milk Cow Blues, Carlos Santana's Havana Moon and Don Henley's Inside Job.

So, don't feel like you have to rush out of Minneapolis after the Rally! The C4L staff would love to meet you if you are able to attend.

If you have not purchased your ticket yet, I urge you to do so today. We are down to our last few tickets!

For more information about the Rally for the Republic please go to www.RallyForTheRepublic.com. You can also visit TicketMaster.com to guarantee yourself a seat. Ron and I believe this will be one of the most important events in the history of our movement.

If you cannot attend, I sincerely hope you will consider a contribution to Campaign for Liberty to help us defray the costs of this event, and help set the foundation for this vital organization. Just click on the Donate button at the www.RallyForTheRepublic.com main page.

Hope to see you there.

In Liberty,

John Tate

P.S. - We are less than 15,000 people away from hitting our goal of 100,000 members. Can you do me a favor and invite a friend, co-worker, or family member right now to join the Campaign for Liberty? Visit our community page to send invitations through our website.

GPF - USA 2008, Washington D.C. August 9th.

Alright, so you might heard me mention it before, but now I'm going to tell you a bit more about it.

The Global Peace Festival is a festival to celebrate the progress towards peace we've already made and the plans we have for the future. However, the biggest thing it is I think, is a call to arms, so to speak. We are calling out to the world that enough is enough, and that if we could all just put the barriers of our race, religion, and nationality behind us we could really have a wonderful place to live here on earth for everyone. Finally, it's also an awareness campaign, to make people aware of the root causes of war and poverty.

There are many reasons for war and poverty in the world. Disease, past colonial oppression, lack of freedom, lack of control, not enough water, not enough infrastructure, misunderstandings and/or stubbornness between people and nations. We at the Universal Peace Federation believe that the key to it all is the family.

The family is the place every one of us starts out life. If we don't learn respect and responsibility within our family, how can we be expected to respect others outside our family or take responsibility outside our family? If we don't have peace and a sense of oneness within our family, how can we be at peace with the world? How can we love our neighbor if we cannot love our brother? How can we care for the people of another nation if we do not care for the ones within out own?

This is why the theme of the Global Peace Festival is One Family Under God. First we have to make individual families which are full of love, respect and a sense responsibility and interdependence, and we believe the best way to do this is through the basic tenants that all different religions teach. From there, we can work towards making whole villages, cities, countries, and the whole world act as one family under God, where we all fallow the basic tenants of our various religions which all teach just about the same thing and we all teat one another as family. A big part of being able to do this is fostering a culture of service, where people learn to live for the sake of others by their own free will.

That's the gist of it anyway. Below is a video which talks about the GPF some more, and below that is the basic schedule which I will be fallowing next week. This schedule isn't for everyone attending the GPF, just those like myself who are also attending the American Youth Leadership Conference I have another, shorter video at the very bottom of this web page if you would prefer.

My Schedule

· Aug 5th Arrival – all participants will arrive in DC, at the Washington D.C. National Cathedral Church (1610 Columbia Rd) and we'll have a short orientation after dinner. I will personally be leaving the Vineyard on the 6 AM boat, to take the 6:55 AM bus to South Station, to take the 11:05 AM train to Washington D.C., finally arriving in D.C. at 6:50 PM

· Aug 6th Community-Wide "Peace Through Service" Day – we will join the service efforts of many partners in DC including some celebrities performing for GPF on this project from 10am – 5pm.

· Aug 7th Outreach – we will join the local efforts of youth on this day, to spread the word on the GPF event on the streets of DC.

· Aug 8th Sightseeing and Interfaith Prayer for Peace – we'll spend a day to discover DC. and God's hope for America, and close with a prayer on the grounds of the main event, at the Mall in front of the Capital building.

· Aug 9th American Leadership Conference and Global Peace Festival – join this conference in the morning and afternoon and be side by side national and world level Ambassadors for Peace as they forge their commitment to hold America to it's founding creed and build One Family Under God. Join us at the Youth Breakout to discuss long-term vision and strategy for the movement of Young Ambassadors for Peace. In the evening we will all attend the Global Peace Festival main event together. The event starts at 5pm at the Capital West Lawn (Independence Ave. and Constitution Ave, SW). Come early for seats and to check out the GPF Service and Cultural Expo from 2-5 on the National Mall (between 3rd and 4th St. NW). My parents and younger brother will arrive for the main GPF event on a bus rented by our church, and I'll be leaving with them at 9 PM on one of those buses back for Massachusetts.

· Aug 10th Youth Celebration – Join the hundreds of youth who have volunteered their time this summer for the Global Peace Festival as they celebrate this day and build up spirit and enthusiasm for many more events that uphold peace in the semester to come. I will have sadly had to miss this part, and instead will be arriving on the Vineyard with my family so I can get to work on time on Monday, the 11th.

If anyone out there feels inspired to help out, I think the best way is to tell everyone you know about it, and if you can, try to show up for the main GPF event on Saturday, the 9th in Washington D.C. Please go to www.gpfusa.org for more information. If you're not in the United States, or even if you are, you may be interested in going to www.globalpeacefestival.org or www.upf.org for more information about GPF events happening in other parts of the world, and other things the UPF is doing to promote world peace.

If you're feeling particularly inspired, or you know won't be able to attend any GPF or UPF events, another great way to help out other than telling all your friends and family is to donate funds to our cause.

Click here to donate to the GPF-USA.
Click here to donate to the Universal Peace Federation, which is the main sponsor of the Global Peace Festival as well as other peace-building initiatives.

To contact the organizers of the Global Peace Festival USA go to http://gpfusa.org/contact-us/

I hope you are inspired by what the GPF is doing and join us in truly making the world a better place by taking on the root causes of the worlds biggest problems.

More Testimony on the Helicopter Crash, pluss a good start to the month.

Before anything else, I want to share with you a link to another testimony about the helecopter crash involving the True Family (Rev. Sun Myung Moon, his wife, their children and grandchildren). This one is from someone who was actually on the helicopter, Peter Kim.

I want to thank Rev. Kalamba W.M. Kayembe of Era of Africa for sending it to me in an email. While I'm at it, I aught to thank Knut Holdhus for providing me with the other testimony by FFWPU President Rev. Hyung Jin Moon.

Now, here's why I've had a good start to the month.

It was a beautiful Friday, I woke up well rested with a clear mind and hardly any pains at all. I went to work still feeling well rested, with only a minor bit of tention in my neck wich I think was built because I planned on taking the 20 question theory exam at the local branch of the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles in order to get my Driveing Learner's Permit. I was also feeling well fed, and generally had a pretty physically healthy feeling about me.

My dad picked me up at work at 12:40 and took me to the RMV. When we got there it was closed, as the RMV (on the Vineyard anyway) closes for lunch. They opened at 13:00, and while there were two people in front of me, there were also two RMV Reps. there, and I was asked to come up fairly quickly.

When I went up to the counter I explaind to the woman I had been away for a while and I've lost my previous permit and wasn't sue if it had expired. She told me it had, so I gave her my U.S. passport, Mass. ID, and a Martha's Vineyard Savings Bank bank statement with my name and address printed on it. Normally I should have had my Social Security Card with me too, but I guess they let is slide since I had done this before and I got the Mass. I.D. from their office. Come to think of it, I don't think I even remembered to fill in my SSN on the yellow form she gave me to fill out. Oh well, I guess they had that already too so they didn't bother asking me about it.

Anyway, I took the test on a computer and it was very easy. To pass the test you must get 14 out of 20 questions correct, and I got 19 of them correct. I got the fealing that the test was easyer this time than the last time - not because I had done it before, as it's been like two years since, but I honestly think the questions weren't as hard as they should have been. Oh well, it worked well for me.

So, I passed the test, she took my picture and printed it out on my new Learner's Permit, and I payed her $30 USD with my MVSB Mastercard Check Check Card. So the only thing that I didn't like is that the fee had exactly doubled since the last time I did this, and it worried me a bit how easy the test was. I don't want just anybody sharing the roads with me, I want to know that the other drivers know what they're doing too. But hey, I'm very greatful that I past so easily. The MV RMV only does road tests on Tuesdays, so the last opportunity I have to get my drivers licence is on the 9th of September, two days before I go back to Norge. That's just 40 days from now, and five of them I won't be able to practice because I'll be in or on my way too or from Washington D.C.

By the way, I also wanted to let everyone know that on Tuesday, the 5th of August, I'll be going to Washington D.C. to repare for the Global Peace Festival - USA event, which is being held on the 9th. More on that tomarrow.

Also, on the way home from work, I came up with a brilliant idea for a story. I don't want to give out too may details here, because this is something I, right now in my moment of isnpiration and passion, would really like to see published and really think could get published if I do a good job.

For starters, it will have something to do with Martha's Vineyard, Brazil, The Vatican and the Catholic Church, Christianity a whole, and a secret cult. The working title is Cross Robbers. If anyone knows of a book already of that title, please let me know so I can think of a different title. I may have to start a new writers blog for specific guests only so people I know around the world can review my work on this project, yet untrustowrthy people won't have as great a chance of finding it and plagiarizing my work.

This latest writing project of mine is much better than anything else I've come up with before. It's not fantacy and therefor it'll be easyer to discribe people, and events. In fact, I'm not even going to go too far into the future with this so I won't even have to make up much new technology. The biggest differences will be that North Korea won't exist as a seperate country, the wars in Iraq, and Afghanistan will be over, and there will be a new North American Union and Pacific Rim Union in the midst of being established.

This month is going to be beautiful, though I really can't wait 'till September! Goodnight for now. I hope God is able to bless you like he has been able to for me.

Sincerely, in Liberty and True Brotherly Love,

Christopher D. Osborn - Tisbury (Vineyard Haven), Massachusetts.

P.S. I really liked the picture they took, so maybe tomarrow, as another P.S., I'll post a link to a scanned copy of the picture itelf.

Latest DownsizeDC Quote

From the Washington Post's annual Mensa Invitational, in which readers to take any word from the dictionary, alter it by adding, subtracting, or changing one letter, and supply a new definition. Here's one of the winners:

"Intaxication: Euphoria at getting a tax refund, which lasts until you realize it was your money to start with."

This came as the header for the latest Downsizer Dishpatch, DownsizeDC's newsletter. This letter was a nice short was, just talking about the new servers they would be getting and letting us all now that their July Buget decreased substantially because of the great deal they found on the new servers. It's the last day of the month, but they stil need just $563 USD more to pay for what they spent this month.

If you want to help out, you can contribute here.

It also talked about the other great progress they're making, with 50,000 messeges to Congress and 571 new DC Downsizers (DownsizeDC members) this moonth. Both are record breakers for the nonprofit political movement.

Mostly I just wanted to share that first quote though. Hope you enjoyed!

Sincerely, in Liberty and True Brotherly Love,

Christopher D. Osborn - Edgartown, MA.
